There are a few easy slopes in the Unternberg ski area next to Ruhpolding, but the best place for ski school is in the Winklmoosalm area, a short shuttle bus ride away. The Winklmoosalm and Steinplatte ski area offers 20km of gentle runs, perfect for complete beginners and families.
For intermediates who are looking for a bit of a challenge, there isn't much to offer in the Unternberg area, so we'd recommend getting the ski bus to the Winklmoos and Steinplatte area for a good 16km of piste to keep you busy. The blue runs here are great for early intermediates who are focused on their technique, while the red runs are fun and testing for more confident skiers.
For an experienced skier, the Unternberg ski area doesn't have much, if anything, to offer, other than the difficult ski route back from the Unterbergalm which has a vertical drop of over 700m. The Winklmoosalm area has a few expert-level slopes that will keep a keen skier busy for a little while, but there aren't many of them either.
Ruhpolding is a mecca for cross-country skiing lovers, as it has amazing snow, a huge network of trails for all abilities and is home to the annual Biathlon World Cup which is held in the Chiemgau Arena. All trails can be used by both skaters and classic-style skiers. You can also ski over to the network in Reit im Winkl if you're keen to explore further. Access to the Chiemgau Arena isn't free, but inside there are various floodlit trails to try out, so it's worth the money.
There's a range of slopes for all abilities at the winter paradise Steinplatte. With the large fun park there that's got a range of equipment including rails and boxes, it's perfect for freestyle snowboarders.
