What is cross country skiing?
Cross-country skiing is a wonderful way to get away from the pistes and ski lifts to the tranquility of the alpine winter countryside. Attracting people of all ages, cross country skiing is easy to pick up even if you haven't tried it before.
Beginners
The cross-country skiing trails are usually 'pisted' - where a machine flattens the snow and makes grooves for your skis to follow.
This makes it easier to ski on - and all you have to do is follow the grooves to stay on the trail. Pistes are signposted and graded with levels of difficulty to ensure you feel comfortable during your cross-country skiing holiday.
If you're new to cross-country skiing we have a great value "Learn to Cross-country Ski" package in the Austrian resort of Seefeld (from €169 per adult and €159 per child). This includes a few hours of tuition each day to allow you the rest of the day to practice what you've learnt and enjoy the beautiful scenery!
The package includes your equipment hire and 5 days of tuition. Lessons are for 2 hours a day.
Equipment Hire & Tuition
Many of our resorts' ski schools offer cross-country skiing tuition and the hire shops offer the hire of cross-country equipment.
Generally you do not need a lift pass for cross-country skiing (the exceptions are where the cross-country area is located in an area above the resort and you may need a lift pass to get to and from it).
Intermediates & advanced
If you have skied before you'll find most resorts offer a good variety of trails ranging in length and difficulty. Some resorts offer red and black runs to give experienced cross-country skiers a bit more challenge!
